THE VERY END (Björn Goosses) interview with METALXPLOSION (Richard Jansson)
Hi Björn!
How is this album different from your previous neckbreaker ”Vs. Life” ?
Well, I could tell you the usual stuff like better songs, better musicianship and so on. And you know what? It's true haha!
Of course a band should grow from album to album, so that's what we did and I hope one can
hear that. „Mercy & Misery“ is more elaborated, more mature in a way. We already incorporated various shades of metal music on „Vs Life“, but on the new album we probably have found a smoother way to do it. Finally „Mercy & Misery“ simply has bigger balls haha!
The only songs I`ve heard from the new album are “Immigrant song” and “A hole in the sun” and on these tracks there is more singing then growling, definitely not a bad thing considering you have got an awesome voice but was it a deliberate choise and in that case why?
Changes happen during the creative process. We didn't plan the new album by saying we would need more singing instead of growling or screaming. It's all about the song, and if a song needs more melody in the voice we simply give the song what it needs.
Yet those two songs show surely more singing than other tracks on „Mercy & Misery“, and you will find plenty of aggressive vocals throughout the whole album.
How come you chose to cover “Immigrant song” ?
The first cover song we chose for „Mercy & Misery“ was „Maniac“, the 80s disco hit, which we gave a crunchy metal vibe. But this song is a bonus track, so we thought doing another cover which would be on the regular album edition. For the second track we wanted to work with a rather classic hard rock / early heavy metal song, and finally it happened to be the „Immigrant Song“ by mighty Led Zeppelin.
We already played this one live some time ago, so we refreshed our version a bit and recorded it for „Mercy & Misery“. It's fun to hear and read how different the reactions on these two cover songs are.
How has it been working with producer Waldemar Sorychta, what did he bring to your sound ?
It was great!
Waldemar isn't only a really experienced producer and an awesome musician himself, he is also
a cool guy and great to work with.
The whole production process went totally smooth. We felt pretty comfy working with Waldemar and his partner Dennis Koehne. We began pre-producing the whole album together before the actual recording to optimize song structures etc, and even though we always had the final word on any changes, Waldemar definitely had a lot of good ideas and pushed our songs to the next level!
Björn, I read on Blabbermouth that you have done the artwork for one of my favorite bands, One man army and the undead quartet, do you do a lot of artwork for metal bands, other then your own?
That's what I live on! My design studio Killustrations is my day job so to say.
So yes, I've been doing quite some artworks throughout the last years, besides the mentioned One Man Army i have worked for various acts such as Dew-Scented, Aborted, Nervecell, Zyklon, Amon Amarth, Sodom, Death Angel, Kataklysm, Nother, Drone, Six Feet Under, God Dethroned etc... my website www.killustrations.com will be relaunched soon, so check back once in a while!
Talking about websites, there's a beta version of www.theveryend.net online now, so check it out! We are still working on it as you read this, and during the next weeks our website will be filled with more and more content, e.g. a small online shop where we will be able to offer the best prices of all The Very End items!
Good luck with the album and Im hoping we will see you in Sweden soon.
Thanx, Richard! I really hope we will get the chance to play in Sweden soon!! And in the meantime I would recommend everybody to get a copy of „Mercy & Misery“! Cheers!
Så nu vet ni vad ni ska göra.
Ha det!
