Breed Machine

Det franska Metal-/Hardcore bandet Breed Machine släppte för inte så längesedan sitt tredje album som passande heter just 3.
Jag tog en liten pratstund med gruppens basist Kriss

When and how did Breed Machine begin?

The band was born around 2004 with the meeting of Ja (guitars) and Deub (drums).
Mike (vocals) joined the band some months later and the band played with different bass players. Actually we have been friends for many years but back in the days I was busy playing the guitar in another band.
Still, a few months after the release the debut album “Eveil Hardcore”, they told me that they were looking for a new bass player. The truth is that I was questioning my band at that moment and the direction that Breed Machine was taking was quite interesting to me.
Therefore I decided to apply for the job and I joined the band in early 2007.

Did you know from the beginning what kind of music you wanted to play?

Hmm, at the very beginning the band was much more into some kind of « Rap-Metal » with heavy riffs.
To be honest I didn’t like it. Then I think that at some point they got fed up with it and turned into something more brutal and oppressive.
It is only when the band released “Eveil Hardcore” that I thought “Wow! This is my kind of shit!” and actually influenced heavily my decision to apply for the bass player position!

What are your musical and lyrical influences?

For the four of us our influences are quite different!
Personally I listen to a lot of different stuff. Next to typical Metal like Korn, Devildriver, Black Bomb A or Chimaira, I also listen to things like Sting, Johnny Cash or American Hip Hop like Ice Cube or Lil Jon.
I think our influences can be found in our music but at the end of the day we really got our own sound!

I think it`s awesome but how come you decided to sing in French instead of English?

Well, we are French so we sing in French. Pretty simple, isn’t it? Actually we don’t believe in the “Metal must be in English”.
Some will say “that’s no good for exporting your music, blabla” but some bands have proved that there’s no need to sing in English to be recognized outside of their country…
Moreover we received some good reviews in non-French magazines and webzines, as well as getting people interested by our music from all over the world… And the most important: we like it!

What are your lyrics about?

Our lyrics are about our feelings regarding the world around us.
It could be about pollution, power, manipulation, calls to rebellion…. Sometimes we go more in occult things like divinity. To match our music they are quite direct and sometimes very raw…
It suits perfectly Mike’s way of singing at the same time! Well they are not poetry that’s for sure!

Did you do anything different on this album (3) then your previous (Renaissance) album?

Completely.
"Eveil Hardcore" and "Renaissance" were composed mainly during rehearsals and sometimes finished straight during the recordings!
This is probably why you can feel this sense of urgency in those albums. The budget was tight and there was no time to lose. But it helped to catch the brutality and rawness of what was Breed Machine in those days.
For "3" we completely changed our approach.
Ja and myself have composed almost everything at home and we worked on the result with the band all together for the finishing touches. We had 20 songs out of the preproduction and we ended up with 16. We also had more time in the studio to really put all our ideas in the recordings. In the end we have a more complex and finished album I believe… I am very happy about it.

What happens now, are you touring?

We are preparing some shows for the end of year.
Currently we are busy on other things as the recording of “3” took a lot of our time and energy.

Do you have any cool/funny tour memories you can tell us about?

Well, we are quite a quiet band once we are out the stage...
Usually, after shows are about meeting our fans and ending up at some place having a chat together with the band’s team, having a few beers, cracking some jokes about each other…
Still we had some gigs where it really ended up out of control, specially one time in Germany at Trier for the “Auf Zum Atem” festival.
The whole night was a drunken party with the organization literally breaking down the house to the rhythm of Brutal Death and Grindcore! We had 700km to drive the following day; I can tell you it was quiet in the bus! Haha! Epic…

Thanks for your time!
Thank you for your interest and the support given to Breed Machine!
